NYC Aquatics Programs
NYC Parks offers a wide range of aquatic programs, from learn-to-swim classes for beginners to competitive teams for youth, as well as specialized exercise and adaptive programs.
Learn to Swim Programs
Lottery Registration
Summer lessons are free for all New Yorkers via a random lottery. Registrations usually open in May.
Registration and Program Dates
Learn to Swim classes are held at our outdoor pools during the fall, winter, and spring seasons. You may enter the lottery once per session.
Registration Dates
You must enter the lottery between the following dates for a chance to be selected:
- Fall Session: September 22, 2025 – October 6, 2025
- Winter Session: December 24, 2025 – January 5, 2025
- Spring Session: March 16, 2026 – March 30, 2026

Competitive Swim Teams
The NYC Parks Swim Team program offers youth the opportunity to compete in a city-wide league while developing sportsmanship and advanced technical skills.
NYC Parks Swim for Life League
Our competitive teams practice at various indoor pools throughout the year. The program culminate in borough-wide and city-wide championships.
Eligibility Requirements
- Must be between the ages of 6 and 18.
- Must be able to swim at least 50 yards (two laps) unassisted.
- Participants must pass a tryout held at the beginning of each season.

Join a Team
Practice schedules vary by facility. Most teams practice 3-4 days per week in the evenings.
Team Fees: $50 - $150 per season (Borough Dependent)
Membership: Youth Recreation Center membership required (Free for under 18).
Note: Space is limited and teams are filled on a first-come, first-served basis following successful tryouts.

Special & Exercise Programs
Senior Splash
A water exercise and socialization program for adults aged 62 and older. Classes focus on improving range of motion and cardiovascular health in a low-impact environment.
Ages 62+Adaptive Aquatics
Specially designed programs for individuals with physical or developmental disabilities. These sessions provide a safe and supportive environment for water exploration.
All AgesWater Exercise
High-energy aerobics classes that use water resistance to provide a total-body workout. Ideal for those looking for cardiovascular conditioning without joint stress.
Adults 18+Youth Water Polo
Introduction to the fundamentals of water polo, including treading water, passing, and shooting. Available at select indoor facilities during the winter season.
Ages 9-17How to Enroll
Most programs require a valid Recreation Center Membership for indoor facilities. To join, Complete a Recreation Center Membership Registration Form and bring it with your payment to any of the recreation center locations with a government-issued ID, plus additional required documentation if you're enrolling as a veteran or enrolling as a person with a disability. Youth may bring a student ID, passport, or birth certificate.
